Portugal is known for Pombal, and part of the reason for this is the company’s influence in national politics. One of the best prime ministers in the country, the 1st Marquis of Pombal is even commemorated with an entire architectural trend called Pombaline. In the 1770s, he moved to this village in the Centro area to retire.
During his latter years, the Marquis made significant contributions to Pombal’s historic center. He commissioned the conversion of a former jail, which today houses an excellent museum dedicated to his life. Along with a number of churches and a mediaeval castle with a contemporary visitor center, there are undiscovered natural beaches along the coast.
