Located in northeastern Portugal’s ancient Transmontano area, Macedo de Cavaleiros is a community that preserves its ancestors’ customs. Some of the customs practiced in the area date back to the pagan era. This also applies to the peculiar, mischievous “Caretos” who wander the streets dressed in brightly colored wool costumes and masks during carnivals.
Given that a large portion of the environment is made up of rocks that are hundreds of millions of years old, the terrain is just as old as the customs. This ecosystem is of such scientific relevance that the entire municipality is referred to as a “geopark.” You may spend hours poring into folklore and the fine craft of beekeeping in museums dedicated to those Caretos. Additionally, one of Portugal’s best interior beaches is accessible on long, sunny days.
